Patrick Kiely has been a Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust since 1999.
He qualified in medicine from the Middlesex and University College Hospital Medical School (University of London) in 1988. Postgraduate medical training was spent at The London Chest Hospital, The University of Southampton Hospitals, The Royal Surrey County Hospital, St George’s Hospital and St Helier and Kingston Hospitals. In 1993 he was awarded a Medical Research Council Training Fellowship to undertake basic scientific research, attaining a Ph.D. degree in 1996 from Cambridge University.
Since joining St George’s as consultant rheumatologist he has become lead clinician for rheumatology in 2001, clinical director for medicine in 2008, and for out patient services in 2009. He has been chairman of the SW Thames regional rheumatology group since 2007.
At St George’s he runs a general rheumatology service and special interest clinics for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis and myositis. Research interests include the fields of rheumatoid arthritis (therapies and ultrasound imaging), Vitamin D insufficiency and inflammatory myositis.
He is a medical advisor to the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society and was a member of the NICE guideline development group for Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2008-09. Other national roles include chairmanship of the research and education committee of the Early Rheumatoid Arthritis Network (ERAN), and membership of the Standards Guidelines and Audit Working Group of the British Society for Rheumatology.
